El Presidente Cocktail Recipe and Rum Guide

El Presidente

The El Presidente is a stirred rum cocktail associated with early twentieth-century Cuba. It combines light rum, dry vermouth, orange curaçao and a small amount of grenadine for a drink that is aromatic, lightly sweet and spirit-forward.

El Presidente recipe

  • 1 1/2 oz light or lightly aged rum
  • 3/4 oz dry vermouth
  • 1/4 oz orange curaçao
  • 1 barspoon grenadine
  • Orange peel or cherry for garnish

Method

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled and properly diluted, then strain into a chilled coupe. Express an orange peel over the surface or garnish with a cherry.

Choose the rum

A clean light rum keeps the cocktail crisp. A lightly aged rum can add gentle vanilla and oak without overwhelming the vermouth. Very dark or heavily spiced rum changes the drink substantially.

Use dry vermouth thoughtfully

Fresh refrigerated vermouth helps preserve the cocktail’s herbal character. If the drink tastes flat or oxidized, the vermouth may be the issue rather than the rum.

Control sweetness

Grenadine and curaçao vary by brand. Begin with modest amounts and adjust after tasting. The finished drink should not resemble a fruit punch.

Make a drier variation

Reduce grenadine or choose a drier orange liqueur. For a softer version, increase vermouth slightly rather than adding more syrup.

Browse the rum collection for an appropriate base. Serve measured portions and provide water alongside this spirit-forward cocktail.
