Product Description
Yamazaki: The Birthplace of Japanese Whisky
Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky is Suntory's flagship single malt, produced at Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery. Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii at the foot of a mountain outside Kyoto, Yamazaki was born from his ambition to create a whisky suited to the delicate Japanese palate. Today it stands as the birthplace of Japanese whisky itself, and its multi-layered character is praised by whisky connoisseurs around the world.
How Suntory Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky Is Made
This whisky brings together components matured in American, Spanish, and Japanese Mizunara oak, a combination unique to Suntory's approach. The distillery sits where the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers converge, creating a naturally misty climate and some of Japan's softest water, ideal conditions for cask aging. Yamazaki's stillhouse uses six pairs of copper pot stills in varying shapes and sizes, allowing the distillery to produce a wide range of whisky styles for blending, all vatted with no caramel coloring added, so the whisky's color comes entirely from the oak. It's bottled at 43% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Color: Gold.
Aroma: Strawberry, cherry, and Mizunara oak.
Palate: Raspberry, white peach, and a touch of coconut.
Finish: Sweet vanilla, clean and clear, with a hint of cinnamon.
Food Pairings
The red fruit and coconut character in Yamazaki pairs beautifully with mild cheeses like brie or comté, a light fruit tart, or delicate seafood dishes. Its aromatic wood spice also complements dark chocolate or a lightly spiced dessert.
Serving Suggestions
Yamazaki is refined enough to sip neat, but it's also excellent in a highball with soda water, an Old Fashioned, or a whisky sour, where its red fruit and Mizunara character shine through. A splash of water can help open up its aromatics further for neat drinkers.
