Mocel Cupreata is a limited-batch artisanal mezcal made from 100% Agave cupreata, known locally in Michoacán as Chino, an agave that takes roughly 8 to 10 years to mature. Maestro mezcalero Livorio, who works in the temperate forests of Michoacán, makes it in a smooth, herbaceous style with a light smoke. The 2023 expression is bottled at 48% ABV in a run of only 360 bottles, each in a ceramic bottle handmade by Mexican artisans, so no two look alike.

Mocel was started by sisters who grew up in rural Washington State, the daughters of farmworker immigrants from Michoacán, a region with its own denomination of origin for mezcal. They make it with two ingredients, agave and water, with no additives to speed up the process, honoring what they call 400 years of artisanship. The brand’s cupreata has won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
