Longrow Peated is the heavily peated single malt from Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, one of Scotland's smallest and most storied whisky regions. It's the smoky counterpart to Springbank's own lightly peated malt, and it's made on the same family-owned site using the same hands-on methods. Springbank describes it as a whisky that "travels through the senses like the smoke billows from a kiln."

Longrow was first produced in 1973 to provide a peaty, oily, and robust component for a blend being created at the time. It's named after another lost Campbeltown distillery that once stood right next to Springbank, whose warehouse now houses Springbank's bottling hall. Since the 1990s it has been a staple of Springbank's production calendar, and it's now one of the most recognizable peated malts from outside Islay.

How Longrow Peated Is Made

Springbank is one of the few distilleries that still malts its own barley. For Longrow, the malted barley is dried over peat smoke for about 48 hours, far longer than the smoke time used for Springbank itself, which gives the whisky its characteristic smoke. Longrow is then distilled twice (Springbank is distilled two and a half times), which leaves a heavier, oilier new-make spirit that leaves the still at about 68% ABV. It's matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, bottled at 46% ABV, and, like all Springbank whiskies, it is non-chill filtered and has no added color. It carries no age statement.

Longrow is the most heavily peated whisky Springbank makes, and the peat is the star, but it's a different kind of smoke than you'll find on Islay.
