Hendrick's Gin: The Gin That Changed the Category
In 1999, William Grant & Sons, the family-owned distillers behind Glenfiddich, asked a young liquid developer named Lesley Gracie to create something genuinely different: a super-premium gin unlike anything else on the market. Inspired by the quintessentially British image of rose gardens and cucumber sandwiches, Gracie crafted a gin built around an idea nobody else was pursuing at the time, and in doing so, sparked the modern gin renaissance.
Hendrick's begins with 11 classic botanicals, including juniper, angelica root, coriander seed, cubeb berries, orris root, chamomile, caraway, elderflower, meadowsweet, and orange and lemon peel, distilled using an almost absurdly inefficient dual-still process at the Hendrick's Gin Palace in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland. A traditional Bennett pot still built in 1860 macerates the botanicals for 24 hours before distillation, producing a rich, intricate spirit, while a rare Carter-Head still built in 1948, one of only a handful left in the world, gently steams its botanicals in a basket for a lighter, more delicate character. The two spirits are then blended together, and only after that blending are essences of Bulgarian Damascena rose petals and specially selected cucumbers infused into the final gin, the finishing touch that gives Hendrick's its unmistakable identity.
That unconventional approach has earned serious recognition: the Wall Street Journal named Hendrick's "Best Gin in the World" in 2003, and it went on to win Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in both 2010 and 2012. Distilled in tiny batches of just 500 litres at a time, Hendrick's remains the world's number one super-premium gin, instantly recognizable by its dark, apothecary-style bottle.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Big, creamy aromas of zesty citrus and assertive juniper, giving way to rose petal jelly and cool cucumber, with chamomile and elderflower lingering softly underneath.
Palate: Clean and superbly balanced, with fresh juniper leading into soaked rose petal, Persian cucumber, and a whisper of Earl Grey tea, followed by green herbal notes and warm spice.
Finish: Long, refreshing, and floral, with stewed cucumber and a pleasant, quinine-like bitterness that keeps the sweetness in check.
Food Pairings
Hendrick's floral, cucumber-forward profile pairs beautifully with fresh, light fare. Try it alongside smoked salmon, cucumber sandwiches, or a citrus and herb salad, or serve it alongside soft cheeses for a classic garden-party spread.
Serving Suggestions
The classic Hendrick's serve is a Gin & Tonic with three ribbons of fresh cucumber instead of the traditional lemon or lime, a garnish that mirrors the gin's defining botanical and lifts its aroma with every sip. It also shines in a dry Martini, a Gin Fizz, a Cucumber Gimlet, or Master Distiller Lesley Gracie's own preferred serve: mixed with soda water and elderflower cordial.
