Description

Experience the Distinct Flavor of Balvenie Tun 1401

We are proud to introduce our latest limited edition expression: Tun 1401, Batch 9. Created exclusively for the United States, this latest addition to the Tun 1401 range will be available in limited supply this October.

This is a rare batch indeed, including exceptional and precious liquid from a number of casks specially selected by our Malt Master, David Stewart.

Inspired by and produced in one of the oldest warehouses at our distillery, Batch 9 is a skillful marriage of some of the rarest treasures from Warehouse 24. It represents an unrepeatable selection of spirits sourced from eleven traditional whisky casks and three sherry butts, whose ages span a number of decades, and which have all been hand-selected by David Stewart. The whisky rested for several months in Tun 1401 – one of the distillery’s unique marrying vessels – to create a single malt that is greater than the sum of its already precious parts.

“We’ve identified what we believe to be an unprecedented range of liquids to comprise this Tun 1401 batch from the vast library of very rare whisky currently maturing at The Balvenie Distillery,” said David Stewart, our Malt Master of over 50 years. “The end result is a complex and completely unique marriage characterized by dark fruits and marmalade on the nose. Its richness and smoothness is underpinned with dark chocolate sweetness, delicate honey notes and a distinctly long, spicy finish."

alvenie tells you the barrel number of each of these casks, but nothing more, only that the casks selected for this batching span “a number of decades.” For reference, Batch 3 had whisky in it as well-aged as 45 years old. And it was a knockout. - See more at: http://www.drinkhacker.com/2013/01/05/review-balvenie-tun-1401-batch-6-single-malt/#sthash.ssTI9Cmm.dpuf

Balvenie’s Tun 1401 is a series of special releases that have been hitting the market, each batch typically a regional release exclusive to an individual country or two. Batch 3 was the first U.S. exclusive. Now there’s Batch 6, another U.S.-only bottling composed of whisky from seven traditional (ex-Bourbon) casks and two sherry butts. - See more at: http://www.drinkhacker.com/2013/01/05/review-balvenie-tun-1401-batch-6-single-malt/#sthash.0v7FQUMr.dpuf

As with Batch 3, experiencing Tun 1401 Batch 6 is a rare experience that few of us will encounter more than once. Although I can’t compare the two batches together (Batch 3 is long gone from the market, though it was only released last summer), my memory and notes both tell a significantly different story.

As is the case with so many older whiskys, it’s a complex and exotic spirit. This time out, Tun 1401 immediately slugs you with a wild nose of camphor, cigar box, incense, and well-aged sherry notes. Citrus is strong on the body, but so is malty and syrupy grain character, vanilla, lumberyard, and old wine notes. And despite all these rich flavors, the body isn’t heavy. It’s light on the tongue, with a lasting but fresh finish. Compared to the heavily fruity and dessert-like Batch 3, it’s a wildly different experience, but one that’s almost as worthwhile.
