Reyka takes its name from the old Icelandic word for "steam," and everything about it draws directly from Iceland's raw, volcanic landscape. Looking to enter the premium vodka market, William Grant & Sons, the same family-owned house behind Hendrick's Gin and Glenfiddich, built the country's first and only distillery in the small coastal village of Borgarnes in 2005. It remains a genuinely tiny operation: each distillation takes about six hours and yields only around 330 cases, powered entirely by geothermal energy from underground volcanoes, making Reyka one of the few certified "green" vodkas in the world.

Made from barley and wheat imported from Scotland, Reyka is distilled just once in a rare Carter-Head still, a type of still typically reserved for gin thanks to its high copper content and unique internal complexity, which contributes to the vodka's notable smoothness from a single pass. The distillate is then filtered through Iceland's abundant lava rock rather than standard charcoal, and brought to proof using arctic spring water drawn from a source running through a 4,000-year-old lava field, water so pure it's bottled and sold on its own. Reyka's master distiller, Þórður Sigurðsson, wears more than one hat around town, he's also Borgarnes' local fireman and policeman.
