Product Description
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Straight Malt Whiskey: 100% Malt Aged in New Oak
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Straight Malt Whiskey is the new-oak half of Woodford Reserve’s 2013 Double Malt Selections. It was released alongside Classic Malt to compare how barrel choice changes two whiskies produced from the same 100% malted-barley distillate.
The Straight Malt was triple distilled in Woodford Reserve’s copper pot stills and matured in new oak barrels, creating a darker, more oak-driven profile than the companion Classic Malt aged in used bourbon barrels. It was bottled at 90.4 proof, or 45.2% ABV, in an individually numbered 750ml presentation.
This is a discontinued Master’s Collection release and should not be merged with the current Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey. The current expression uses 51% malt, while this 2013 experimental bottling was made entirely from malted barley.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Toasted malt, caramel and vanilla meet fresh oak, cocoa, citrus and warm baking spice.
Palate: Fuller and woodier than Classic Malt, with malt sweetness, dark chocolate, charred oak, cooked fruit and pepper.
Finish: Warming and oak-led, leaving cocoa, spice, malt and a dry charred note.
Food Pairings
Pair with grilled steak, roasted mushrooms, aged cheddar, toasted pecans or dark chocolate. The new-oak structure can handle charred foods and richer desserts better than its lighter companion bottling.
Serving Suggestions
Serve neat first, then add a few drops of water to reveal malt, fruit and chocolate behind the oak. One large cube is suitable for a slower pour. Store the limited bottle upright and protected from light.
