Woodford Reserve Classic Malt Whiskey: 100% Malt Matured in Used Bourbon Barrels

Woodford Reserve Classic Malt Whiskey is one half of the limited 2013 Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection Double Malt Selections. Woodford released Classic Malt alongside Straight Malt to demonstrate how two different barrel types could shape whiskey made from the same 100% malted-barley distillate.

Classic Malt was triple distilled in Woodford Reserve’s copper pot stills and matured in used bourbon barrels, following a cask approach more commonly associated with Scotch-style malt whisky. It was bottled at 90.4 proof, or 45.2% ABV, in individually numbered 750ml bottles.

It should not be confused with Woodford Reserve’s later Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey, which uses a 51% malt mash bill and new charred oak. This 2013 limited release is 100% malt and carries its own UPC and presentation.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh grain, clover honey, hay, orange peel and light vanilla emerge over a delicate used-cask oak note.

Palate: Sweet malt and citrus lead, with honey, dried grass, soft pepper and restrained oak.

Finish: Dry and gently spicy, leaving malt, citrus peel and a light bitter-oak edge.

Food Pairings

Pair with smoked trout, mild cheddar, roasted poultry, toasted almonds or honey cake. Its lighter used-barrel profile works better with moderate flavors than heavily charred or intensely sweet dishes.

Serving Suggestions

Serve neat in a tulip-shaped glass and allow several minutes for the malt aromas to open. A few drops of water can soften the proof and emphasize honey and citrus. Store this limited bottle upright in a stable, dark place.
