Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky: A Happy Accident, Barreled Twice
Old Forester 1910 Old Fine Whisky is the fourth and final expression in the Whiskey Row Series, and it tells the best story in the lineup. On October 22, 1910, a fire on the bottling line halted production at Old Forester. The mature whisky that was ready to be bottled had to be moved into secondary barrels and stored while the line was repaired. What came out of that second barrel was a delightful whisky, so different from regular Old Forester and so good that it became an entirely new expression: Old Fine Whisky. Master Distiller Chris Morris called it the first documented double-barreled whisky, and it revealed a previously unknown heritage of double-barreled bourbons at the brand.
The 1910 bottling mimics that happy accident. It's a double-barreled bourbon, finished in a heavily charred, lightly toasted second barrel, and presented at 93 proof. It earned a Gold Medal at the 2023 San Francisco Spirits Competition and a 93 at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
How Old Forester 1910 Is Made
The base is regular Old Forester, made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. Once the bourbon is fully mature, it's moved into a second new barrel, just as it was in 1910. Old Forester Master Taster Jackie Zykan explains, "Mature Old Forester enters a second barrel at 100 proof, just as it did in 1910. The second barrel is charred nearly to the point of incineration." Entering that second barrel at a low 100 proof lets more of the sweet wood sugars dissolve into the whiskey. The result is a smooth, sweet bourbon with a clean, crisp finish and more body and dessert-like character than the standard bottling. It's bottled at 93 proof (46.5% ABV).
Tasting Notes
Nose: Interlaced layers of buttercream, sticky toffee, baked apple, and a hint of roasted coffee beans.
Palate: Smooth and well rounded, with sweet oatmeal raisin cookie leading into warm cinnamon, nutmeg, and mocha.
Finish: Viscous yet slightly dry, with peripheral spice and smoky charred oak.
Food Pairings
The toffee, cookie, and mocha character in Old Forester 1910 pairs well with oatmeal raisin cookies, pecan pie, and bread pudding. It also goes well with dark chocolate, coffee desserts, smoked brisket, and grilled pork. For a simple pairing, try it with a slice of apple pie.
Serving Suggestions
Old Forester 1910 is best sipped neat, to appreciate the buttercream sweetness and charred oak. A single large ice cube will soften the proof without muting the flavor. It also makes a rich Old Fashioned, where its sweetness and char stand up to bitters and an orange peel.
