Ilegal Mezcal Anejo 750ml is a small-batch aged mezcal made from 100% Espadín agave in the Santiago Matatlán Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico. Ilegal’s core mezcals are double distilled by fourth-generation mezcaleros.

Each lot of Añejo is aged to taste for 13 months in a combination of new and used American-oak barrels with a medium char. The barrels are sourced from Kelvin Cooperage, and the aging adds maple, clove, bitter orange and dark chocolate around the underlying sweet agave and smoke.

This is mezcal, not tequila. Although both are distilled from agave, Ilegal uses Espadín and traditional Oaxaca mezcal production rather than the Blue Weber agave and tequila denomination associated with Jalisco.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Maple, clove and bitter orange lead, followed by toasted oak, sweet agave and restrained smoke.

Palate: Dark chocolate and cooked agave develop with oak spice, caramel, citrus peel and a smoky earthy undertone.

Finish: Rich and persistent, leaving chocolate, clove, oak and lingering sweet smoke.
