Blackened Cask Strength Volume 01 by Metallica

Product Description

Blackened Cask Strength Volume 01: Metallica’s Uncut, Non-Chill-Filtered Blend at 122.85 Proof

Blackened Cask Strength Volume 01 is the first release in Metallica’s limited cask strength series. It’s the same blend of North American bourbons and ryes as the original Blackened American Whiskey, married together, finished in brandy casks, and then bottled uncut and non-chill filtered at 122.85 proof (61.4% ABV). The brand says the result is a viscous, even bolder whiskey, and master distiller and blender Rob Dietrich describes cask strength as whiskey in its purest form.

Each volume of the series is its own batch, with its own proof and flavor, and each is limited in quantity. Volume 01 was originally a limited release in certain states before it went national.

The Black Noise Finish

The brand’s BLACK NOISE™ process was co-developed with Meyer Sound’s sound engineers. It plays low-frequency sound waves, Metallica’s music, through the finishing casks, which the brand says makes the whiskey reverberate against the oak staves, releasing more wood compounds and flavor. Reviewers have called Volume 01 surprisingly light and vibrant for its proof.

Tasting Notes

From Blackened’s own notes.

Nose: Rolled oats, vanilla wafer, fig, maple sugar, and toffee.

Palate: Walnut, caramel, and vanilla crème, with a rich, viscous texture.

Finish: Brown sugar, ancho chili, and cinnamon spice.

Drinkhacker also noted dark toffee, caramel corn, chocolate-covered raisins, and red pepper spice. A few drops of water bring out more depth.

Food Pairings

The maple, chili, and cinnamon pair well with barbecue ribs, smoked brisket, and chili. It also goes with dark chocolate, aged cheddar, pecan pie, and a cigar.

Serving Suggestions

At 122.85 proof, pour a small measure neat in a Glencairn and give it a minute. Add a few drops of water or one large cube if you want it to open and soften. It’s a sipper, not a mixer.
