Product Description
Boodles British Gin: The London Dry That Skips the Citrus on Purpose
Boodles takes its name from Boodle's, the storied gentlemen's club in St. James's, London, founded in 1762 by Edward Boodle and still standing today. First produced in 1845 by Cock Russell & Company, Boodles became one of the defining gins to shape the modern London Dry style, and its most famous reputed fan was none other than British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, a member of the very club that lent the gin its name.
What makes Boodles genuinely distinctive isn't a bold new botanical, it's what's deliberately left out. Unlike nearly every other London Dry gin on the shelf, Boodles contains no citrus botanicals whatsoever, a conscious choice by the original distillers, who reasoned that any proper gin drink always included a slice of lemon or lime anyway, making citrus in the recipe itself redundant. In its place, Boodles leans on nutmeg, sage, rosemary, angelica root, lavender, and candied ginger, built on a base of clean spirit distilled from English wheat and redistilled in a rare Carter Head copper still in Cheshire, allowing the botanicals to gradually infuse rather than boil directly into the spirit. The result is a mellow, herbal gin that lets juniper's piney character take center stage, rather than reaching for the same citrus-forward profile most competitors chase.
Whether you're a Churchill history buff, a fan of understated, herb-forward London Dry gin, or simply curious what a citrus-free recipe brings to a classic Gin & Tonic, Boodles offers a genuinely different take on a category that usually leans hard on lemon and lime.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Crystal clear.
Nose: Woody, bark-like aromas suggest a lavish use of angelica root, joined by floral lavender, candied ginger, and sage.
Palate: Classic juniper-pine character balanced by herbal rosemary, black pepper, and coriander, with a curious flash of grapefruit-like flavor despite containing no actual citrus.
Finish: Spicy, with lingering coriander, black pepper, and gentle herbal warmth.
Food Pairings
Boodles' herbal, juniper-forward profile pairs well with roasted chicken, herbed goat cheese, or a fresh garden salad, dishes that echo its sage and rosemary character.
Serving Suggestions
Boodles shines in a classic Boodles and Tonic with a cucumber garnish rather than the usual citrus wheel, or in a dry Martini, where its herbal complexity and Churchill connection make it a natural choice for a Vesper.
