“Celebrity-owned” is often used as shorthand, but the real relationship may be more complicated. A public figure can be a founder, co-founder, minority investor, spokesperson, creative partner or former owner whose name remains closely linked to the brand. Ownership can also change after an acquisition.
Founder is not the same as current owner
Casamigos was created by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman, but Diageo completed its acquisition of the tequila brand in 2017. The founders remained important to the brand story, while the corporate ownership changed. That is different from saying the celebrity connection was invented—it means the timeline matters.
A continuing stake can survive an acquisition
When Diageo announced its agreement to acquire Aviation Gin and Davos Brands in 2020, it described Ryan Reynolds as a co-owner who would retain an ongoing ownership interest. Diageo later completed the acquisition. A simple headline saying the brand was “sold” does not explain the continuing relationship.
Other common celebrity relationships
- Founder or co-founder: involved in creating and launching the brand.
- Investor: owns a financial stake but may not control daily operations.
- Creative or marketing partner: shapes campaigns without necessarily owning the company.
- Former owner: sold a stake or the full brand; current endorsement should not be assumed.
- Licensing partner: allows a name or image to be used under a commercial agreement.
How to verify a claim
- Read the brand’s current About or Our Story page.
- Check acquisition announcements from the buyer and seller.
- Look for current corporate portfolio pages.
- Compare the publication date with later transactions.
- Use precise wording: founded by, invested in, partnered with or formerly owned.
Explore QLS’s celebrity-associated alcohol collection and individual Celebrity Picks pages where available. Those pages should distinguish current and historical relationships rather than placing every celebrity in the same category.
