What to Do When a Liquor Store’s Selection Is Too Limited

Liquor Store

A limited selection does not always mean you need a different event plan. Start by identifying the required style, use and budget, then compare acceptable alternatives instead of searching only for one brand.

Define the bottle’s job

Is it for a cocktail, a toast, a neat pour or a gift? A mixing spirit needs the right flavor and proof, while a gift may depend more on presentation and recipient preference.

Search by category and style

Compare broader selections of whiskey, bourbon, tequila, rum and wine. Review the producer description, proof, age statement and bottle size rather than relying on appearance alone.

Build a substitution rule

Choose an alternative with the same category, similar flavor direction, comparable strength and a price that fits the approved budget. For cocktails, test the substitution before changing a large batch.

Know when not to substitute

Do not quietly change a named tasting bottle, collectible gift, allergen-sensitive ingredient or menu item whose identity is part of the experience. In those cases, change the activity or communicate the replacement clearly.

Plan earlier for large orders

  • Approve two alternatives per category.
  • Confirm inventory before printing menus.
  • Avoid relying on one rare bottle.
  • Keep bottle sizes consistent for quantity calculations.
  • Allow delivery time for replacements.
