Gin Basil Smash: Recipe, History & Technique

Bright green Gin Basil Smash with fresh basil

The Gin Basil Smash is bright green, aromatic and modern, but its structure is simple: gin, fresh basil, lemon and sugar. The drink became a contemporary classic because muddling basil releases an unmistakable fresh aroma without requiring unusual equipment.

Gin Basil Smash recipe

  • 2 oz gin
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½–¾ oz simple syrup
  • 8–12 fresh basil leaves
  1. Add basil and syrup to a shaker and press gently.
  2. Add gin, lemon and ice.
  3. Shake hard and double-strain over fresh ice.
  4. Garnish with a basil sprig.

Why the drink works

Juniper and citrus in gin naturally support basil’s peppery, green aroma. Lemon adds acidity, while syrup rounds the edges. The goal is freshness rather than excessive sweetness.

Choosing the gin

A classic London Dry style gives the drink structure. A softer floral gin makes a gentler version, while a very botanical gin can compete with the basil. Explore the gin collection.

Common mistakes

  • Using wilted or blackened basil.
  • Over-muddling until the drink becomes bitter.
  • Skipping fine straining.
  • Using bottled lemon juice.
