Nikka Coffey Malt Japanese Whisky

Product Description

Coffey Malt: Malt Whisky, Made the Unconventional Way

Nikka Coffey Malt takes an approach almost no other producer attempts: distilling 100% malted barley through a Coffey continuous still, equipment nearly every distillery reserves exclusively for grain whisky. Nikka uses the two Coffey stills at its Miyagikyo distillery, which have been in operation for more than 50 years, to run this unconventional malt whisky instead. First introduced in 2013 and added to Nikka's core range in 2014, Coffey Malt represents a genuine experiment that paid off, delivering a texture and character unlike a traditional pot-distilled single malt.

How Nikka Coffey Malt Is Made

This whisky is distilled entirely from malted barley at Miyagikyo, using Coffey stills rather than the pot stills normally required to earn the "single malt" designation. That continuous distillation method gives Coffey Malt a surprisingly rich, dense texture that Nikka specifically developed for, resulting in a whisky that reads as more full-bodied and layered than its Coffey Grain sibling. It's bottled at 45% ABV.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich spices and candied citrus, with cake spice and dusty cacao.

Palate: Robust and dense, with cinnamon, clove, and lemon, layered with oaken vanilla and sweet, milky cocoa.

Finish: Long, with rich oak, tobacco, and mild chocolate.

Food Pairings

The cinnamon and cocoa character in Nikka Coffey Malt pairs well with a spiced fruitcake, dark chocolate, or aged Gouda. Its citrus notes also complement a light lemon tart or candied almonds.

Serving Suggestions

Nikka Coffey Malt is excellent neat, where its dense, spiced texture can fully shine, but it also makes a strong base spirit in cocktails thanks to that same richness.
