Four Roses Small Batch Select blends six of the distillery’s ten bourbon recipes (OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK, and OESF), each aged a minimum of 6 years, and bottles the result non-chill filtered at 104 proof (52% ABV). Master Distiller Brent Elliott hand-selected the recipes for flavors that aren’t as forward in Four Roses’ other bottles. The distillery debuted it in April 2019 as the first permanent addition to its lineup in 12 years.

Four Roses makes bourbon differently from most distilleries. It uses two mash bills, a higher-rye “B” (60% corn, 35% rye, 5% malted barley) and a lower-rye “E” (75% corn, 20% rye, 5% malted barley), with five yeast strains, which yields ten distinct recipes. Select draws on three of those yeasts: V (delicate fruit), K (slight spice), and F (herbal and mint). Skipping chill filtration keeps the oils and proteins that give it a fuller, more straight-from-the-barrel texture while the whiskey stays mellow and smooth. It’s bottled at the Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, with natural color.
