Product Description
Coffey Grain: The Whisky That Redefines the Category
Nikka Coffey Grain quietly resets expectations for what grain whisky can be. Introduced in the second half of 2012, it's produced mainly from corn at Nikka's Miyagikyo distillery, using two continuous Coffey stills imported from Scotland in 1963. Named after 19th-century inventor Aeneas Coffey, these historic stills retain more character during distillation than modern column stills built purely for efficiency, and that difference is the whole reason Coffey Grain works as well as it does.
How Nikka Coffey Grain Is Made
This whisky is distilled from a mash bill primarily of corn with a small portion of malted barley to aid fermentation, run continuously through Nikka's vintage Coffey stills rather than the twin pot stills used for single malt production. Instead of yielding a light, neutral spirit, that process produces something creamy, sweet, and genuinely complex, a texture and depth most grain whiskies simply don't have. It's bottled at 45% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Tropical fruits, coconut, and banana.
Palate: Rich, soft, and sweet, with a hint of vanilla wafer, ripe fruit, cinnamon, and toffee.
Finish: Long and lingering, with rich oak and marmalade notes.
Food Pairings
The coconut and banana character in Nikka Coffey Grain pairs well with a tropical fruit tart, banana bread, or a caramel flan. Its vanilla and toffee notes also complement a light custard or coconut cake.
Serving Suggestions
Nikka Coffey Grain is excellent neat, where its rich corn sweetness and honeyed citrus character can shine, but it also holds up well in cocktails, particularly ones that call for a smooth, characterful base spirit.
