MacNair's Lum Reek 12 Year Old Whisky is named after Harvey MacNair, a 19th-century distiller and traveling trader who worked at GlenAllachie. As the story goes, MacNair was drinking a dram one night in a bothy with a blocked chimney, and the smoke that filled the room had what he called "a marvelous effect on the whisky in my glass," inspiring the smoky character that became the forerunner of this dram, a scene still depicted on the bottle's label. The name "Lum Reek" comes from a traditional Scottish toast, "Lang may yer lum reek," wishing someone a long life and prosperity.

How MacNair's Lum Reek 12 Year Old Is Made

This blended malt was created by industry veteran Billy Walker, formerly of GlenDronach and now head of the GlenAllachie Distillers Company. It combines single malts from Islay and Speyside, both peated and unpeated, including aged GlenAllachie whisky itself. The blend is matured 12 years in a combination of first-fill bourbon, red wine, and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, then bottled without added coloring or chill-filtration at 46% ABV.

Nose: Sweet peat reek, warming mocha, Scottish heather, and butterscotch, with vanilla, lemon peel, and touches of tobacco.
