Some whiskeys are made every year. Westward Whiskey Milestone Edition No. 4 is made once. It’s a limited, individually numbered American single malt from Portland, Oregon, drawn from a 21-barrel Solera, a living collection of some of Westward’s oldest and most precious whiskeys that changes every year as whiskey is drawn off for the release and new casks take its place. Each Milestone captures the Solera at one moment in its evolution, and the brand says this edition “can never be repeated.”

Edition No. 4, the fourth annual release, was blended by Miles Munroe, who took his inspiration from Cognac and Armagnac: brandies shaped by one harvest and one place. Most of this year’s whiskey went through secondary maturation in Hungarian oak, which bridges the spice of French oak and the sweetness of American oak, and in large Armagnac casks of French oak. The result is bottled at 57% ABV (114 proof). The nose opens with Manuka honey, gardenia, coconut, and citrus oil, the palate turns richer with brown sugar, split oak, vanilla, apricot, and fig, and the finish runs long with citrus rind, cherry, tobacco, walnut, and espresso.
