竹鹤纯麦威士忌虽然被称为“未陈酿”，但实际上是由日本余市和宫城子两家单一麦芽威士忌调配而成。这款调配威士忌以日本威士忌之父、这两家著名酒厂的创始人竹鹤政孝的名字命名，他于20世纪20年代在苏格兰学习了酿酒技艺。
他在气候寒冷的地区建造了一座当时风格的酿酒厂，几年后又在气候温暖的地区建造了另一座，采用了当时先进的新技术。两座酒厂各自拥有独特的风味，最终融合为一款极致的日本威士忌。
每种酒桶类型都增添了其自身的特性，使这款酒变得极其复杂，而宫城峡麦芽威士忌在这款酒中所占比例较大，赋予了它清新、果香浓郁的口感。
