老奥弗霍尔特威士忌的特别之处在于，它是唯一一款仍然遵循宾夕法尼亚州莫农加希拉传统威士忌配方的黑麦威士忌。
如今老奥弗霍尔特威士忌的代言人亚伯拉罕·奥弗霍尔特于1810年开始酿造黑麦威士忌，并于1812年在宾夕法尼亚州西奥弗顿建立了一家商业酿酒厂，生产老农场纯黑麦威士忌。1860年，亚伯拉罕的儿子雅各布·奥弗霍尔特和他的堂兄亨利·奥弗霍尔特在附近的布罗德福德建造了第二家酿酒厂，第一批带有奥弗霍尔特品牌的黑麦威士忌正是在这里酿造的。
