詹姆斯·戈斯林（James Gosling）是葡萄酒和烈酒商人威廉·戈斯林（William Gosling）的长子，他于1806年春季启程前往美洲。他们从英国肯特郡格雷夫森德港出发，乘坐“水星号”（Mercury）轮船，船上载有价值1万英镑的货物。航行91天后，由于租约到期，他们被迫停靠在最近的港口——百慕大群岛的圣乔治港。詹姆斯随后留了下来，他的弟弟也来到了这里，他们与父亲合伙开办了一家公司。这家公司至今仍由戈斯林家族经营。
