这款威士忌最初名为“黑标”（Black Label），后更名为“黑丝绒威士忌”（Black Velvet Whisky），以彰显其非凡的丝滑口感。酒精度：40%。自1945年创立以来，位于魁北克省瓦利菲尔德的申利酒厂（Schenley distillery）一直是加拿大顶级烈酒的代名词。
黑丝绒威士忌畅销全球55多个国家，是国际领先品牌。其独特的两步陈酿工艺——在威士忌诞生之初便进行调配——使黑丝绒威士忌成为卓越品质和始终如一的典范。20世纪40年代末，首席酿酒师杰克·纳皮尔发现，通过精心调配他最优质的加拿大威士忌，可以打造出一种口感格外顺滑的佳酿。曼尼托巴省酒类管理局下了第一份黑丝绒威士忌的订单。
机缘巧合之下，当时曼尼托巴省的酒类法规规定，每瓶烈酒在售卖时都必须单独装盒。由于当时没有合适的纸盒可以及时完成订单，一位当地供应商建议用圆筒代替。这种独特的包装后来成为了该品牌的标志，至今仍可通过特殊订单订购。黑丝绒（Black Velvet）于1951年首次进入加拿大市场时便大获成功，以至于不得不对当地酒类商店实行限量供应。
