Stone Old Guardian Extra Hoppy
Part of Stone Brewing Company’s “Odd Beers for Odd years” programe, 2015 Odd Year release takes their foundation Old Guardian American-style barley wine, tweaking it, adding a new, creative twist which has made this release excessively hefty, rich and robust. It's Extra Hoppy, showcasing the new Azacca hop.
Whilst big on hops, it’s also big on malt and pours clear, deep amber with a creamy tan head. Overwhelming aromas derived from the Azacca hop bring candied fruit, with hints of vanilla and rich toffee malt. The palate is smooth and creamy throughout; fruity citrus and pineapple, cream soda and fruitcake. Mid palate the hops shine; it becomes spicy and herbal with a substantial finish bittersweet and warm with alcolhol heat.
This will become more glorious when aged, but if you plan to do that, you’ll need to buy in a good stock now, because this limited special edition craft brew will fly off the shelves.
It can be paired with so many foods from from appetizer to deserts. Have it alongside coconut shrimp or blue cheese stuffed mushrooms, beef stew or teriyaki skewers, curried dishes, gumbo and soups. It can cope with Stilton, rich aged Gouda or Devils Gouch, or wash down fruitcake or pecan pie.
