Mad River Malvados Apple Brandy
Translated from Spanish into English ‘odjos malvados' means evil eye.
Mad River Distillers Malvados, a clever but perhaps irreverent take on the French Calvados is a wicked apple brandy which has been crafted on site at the Cold Springs Farm in Vermont.
It is made using heirloom varietal apples which have been picked from the orchards of Vermont and even includes apples that were picked from trees on Mad River’s own Cold Springs Farm.
Taking inspiration from the areas heritage where originally New Englanders would drink cider, ‘jacking’ it over the hard winter by freezing it, removing the formed ice to produce a more concentrated alcoholic beverage behind. It was only later, when immigrants brought stills with them that the cider was simply distilled into brandy.
Golden hued, Malvados is sweet, sour and tart. Incredibly fruity. It puckers the mouth, is refreshing and makes a superb aperitif, is cleansing between courses and makes wondrous cocktails.
