Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon - Caymus Vineyards, Napa Valley.
In 1971, ranch owners Charlie and Lorna Wagner having seen their son Chuck graduate from High School were ready to sell up and were toying with the idea of emigrating to Australia. However, as they contemplated making this epic move they also made a proposition to Chuck, in the shape of asking him if he would like to join them in starting up a winery.
Of course Chuck accepted this challenge and Caymus winery was born taking its name from the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Caymus, which was given to George Yount in 1836. This land which encompassed what eventually became the town of Rutherford and much of the surrounding area is the location of this now very successful vineyard.
Still 100% family owned, first mother, father and son who were a remarkable team and spent 3 decades working together and now some ten years or more on Chuck is joined by his own sons and daughter and together then tend their 350 acres of prime Napa Valley land going to extraordinary lengths in vineyard selection, winemaking and farming techniques to ensure consistently superior quality Cabernet with every vintage.
Climate and soil is of paramount importance in winemaking and their wine blends grapes which are grown in several vineyards to produce wine which is complex, flavorful and decidedly well balanced.
Due to poor yield this vintage is light in quantity, however it retains the house of Caymus quality and possesses the most extraordinary character. It can be enjoyed now, in its colorful and exuberant youth, or it can be laid down to age, and to develop and to become more mature.
Dark and dangerous, it is a deep scarlet red in color and upon opening it is at once forceful with wondrous aromas that are driven forth by the succulent sweet Carbernet grape. The nose suggests lush fields of purple violets and juicy dark fruits like plums and blackberries. Brooding, its texture is soft and supple, its flavors explode in the mouth, complex and tannin rich, plum and damson, blackberry and rosehip with a suggestive layer of cacao all mingle with the sweet ripeness of the perfectly matured fruit.
